In addition to functional and aesthetic considerations, the desired finish can be limited by the thickness of the tile, paver or cladding and can also have an impact on the square metre cost of the finished product.
Thin tiles and cladding of 10mm to 12mm can be successfully polished, honed, finelined and sandblasted however they are unsuitable for impact finishes due to the risk of cracking.
Any finish requiring removal of the surface by impact, (for example bush hammering, chiselling or picking) or by delamination (for example flaming or exfoliation) requires a thicker product to sustainthe treatment without cracking - the minimum thickness for these finishes is usually around 18mm depending on stone type.
The requirement for a thicker product results in a reduction of product units per tonne, which reduces the number of units per container load and consequently a higher shipping cost per square metre.
