Cobbles are an aesthetic alternative to concrete and bitumen as well as being non-slip and extremely durable. Their size and density ensure they have a very high compressive strength meaning they are perfect for public streetscaping and for use in areas where there is vehicular traffic. Whilst the initial outlay is more expensive than concrete or bitumen their durability means that they will look good and require negligible repair and maintenance for years....centuries even!
There are many uses for cobblestones. Councils and landscape architects frequently use them for streetscaping projects including
• Road paving
• Footpaths
• Demarkation areas
• Pedestrian crossings
• Tree surrounds
• Warning strips before school crossings
• Speed bumps
• Anti-rollerblade/skateboard areas
• Roundabouts
• Feature paving in a garden or outdoor seating area using two or more colours
• Pool and spa surrounds
• Garden and lawn edges
Cobbles are most commonly cubic but are available in a range of sizes and thicknesses depending on requirements and laying method. When laying on a bed of sand, cubic cobbles should be used. However, if laying into concrete in areas of pedestrian activity only, need not be as thick as those required to bear heavy load weights of vehicular traffic. This is an important consideration in costing of cobbled areas.
