Basalt is an extrusive volcanic rock that ranges in colour from blue-grey through to black. It is the most common rock in the Earth’s crust and makes up most of the ocean floor. It is commonly a fine-grained stone - the result of lava cooling rapidly when coming into contact with air or water.
Basalt is a very hard stone but is easily worked, allowing it to take on a wide range of both decorative and functional finishes from smooth highly polished indoor tiles, through to slip-resistant, flamed, honed and sandblasted finishes suitable for outdoor areas, while picked or bush- hammered finishes give a decorative and eye-catching effect.
It is highly porous and readily absorbs water to leave a dry surface making it extremely suitable surface for outdoor areas where slip resistance and safety are paramount. For this reason it is the stone of choice for many public spaces.
