Stone Type / Quartzite

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock created when extreme heat and pressure is applied to sandstone.

Quartzite is sandstone that has been metamorphosised by intense heat and pressure. It is very hard to work, very hard wearing and is popular owing to the ‘industrial’ colours it comes in.

Commercially the term Quartzite is applied to a type of slate that has been subjected to exposure to quartz and silica deposits which give it a very shiny metallic sheen. The metamorphic process has resulted in a much harder stone than slate.

Quartzite is much harder, as well as more stain and scratch resistant than its parent rock, making it ideal for high-traffic and other areas needing a durable and resistant surface. Despite being hard and non-porous it has very good anti slip properties making it particularly suitable for areas which are exposed to the weather.

The small crystal size and hardness of quartzite allows it to take well to a range of finishes however honed and polished finishes serve it best in terms of accentuating the metallic lustre and glow of the coloured impurities, making this a truly beautiful stone.
