Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed of the mineral Calcite (Calcium Carbonate). It is created predominantly from the shells of marine organisms which are deposited on ocean floors and cemented under the weight of the waterbody over thousands of years.
Whilst pure limestone is white, impurities such as clay , silt, oxides and organic materials create limestones which come in a range of colours from black to grey to blue and rich browns.
Limestone has a very smooth granular surface with hardness depending on its source. Whilst it is a heavy and physically hardwearing stone, it is relatively softer than granite or marble, making it easy to work with and suitable for a variety of indoor and outdoor uses. It takes well to a variety of decorative finishes from polishing of harder limestones for floors through to chiselled and bush hammered cladding for walls and water features.
When used as a floor surface, Limestone's porosity means that it absorbs water well, enhancing its slip resistance however this also means it may remain moist which may encourage growth of algae, particularly in shadier outdoor locations. To prevent this regular cleaning may be necessary, alternatively, sealing with a water retardant sealant is recommended.
Kotastone is limestone from around the town of Kota in Rajasthan. Kotatone is renowned for being a particularly hard and hard wearing, non-porous, non-absorbant, highly stain resistant yet are very slip resistant making it particularly popular for flooring and cladding. It typically comes in distinct brown and bluish-green colours. Also from Rajasthan is the Jaisalmer Yellow limestone with similar properties to Kotastone, celebrated for the consistency of its colour and for containing unique fossil imprints.
