Sandstone is created when grains, of predominantly quartz and feldspar, are deposited in layers on the beds of oceans and rivers, then cemented together with particles of clay and silt, aided by the pressure of the water body.
The varying compositions of the clay and silt cement is what gives sandstones their characteristic colours, ranging from deep reds and purples as seen in south western United States, to the yellows and oranges of the Sydney basin to the pinks and reds of Rajasthan and the pale, fine grained whites and creams of the very popular Himalayan sandstones.
Sandstone, whilst hardwearing and long lasting is one of the softer stones making it easy to work with and popular in construction. Whilst its most common application is for paving and cladding, it is also widely used for posts and bollards, outdoor furniture, water features and other landscaping applications.
Being porous and with good water absorption propoerties, it is particularly popular for outdoor areas where slip resistance is a concern, including pool surrounds and public walkways.
Indian sandstone is harder and with a finer grain than that commonly found in Australia and as such lends itself well to honed and polished finishes as well as more decorative picked and chiselled finishes. Some varieties also contain plant fossil imprints resulting in a unique and eye catching finish.
