Slate is a fine-grained, sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash, which has been metamorphosed in layers. It has two lines of breakability, along the cleavage and along the grain. This makes it possible to split slate into thin sheets, traditionally making it most suitable for roofing shingles but also for floor tiles.
Slate is non-porous as well as being highly stain, chemical and heat resistant making it ideal for use in kitchen areas. While it scratches and chips easily, this tends to give it a rustic, weathered or aged look.
The surface finish of slate is usually honed as slate is too soft to produce a highly polished finish like granite or marble. The honed finish results in a smooth matte finish suitable for benchtops.
Slate can also be sandblasted which results in a rough textured finish but the more common finish used in slate is the natural cleft finish. This will leave the surface of the stone rough and uneven which is suitable for flooring but not for benchtops.
